Beating the summer heat means turning on your air conditioning unit. Unfortunately, lowering the settings on your thermostat may cause your energy bills to skyrocket. Maintaining the perfect temperature involves a balancing act between ensuring energy efficiency and determining the family’s comfort preferences.
Jon Wayne Company, one of the top local HVAC contractors, shares the best thermostat settings for summer, according to experts.
Recommended Thermostat Settings for Summer
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, setting your thermostat to 78°F (26°C) will help you stay comfortable at home, allowing your AC unit to keep you cool without causing an uptick in your electricity consumption. If you’re not satisfied with the comfort level in your home, you can invest in a dehumidifier to ensure the air inside your home stays cooler.
What if you’re in the office or away from home for more than two hours? The Department of Energy recommends setting the thermostat to a temperature that’s a bit warmer than where it’s set when you’re at home. To ensure comfort while saving on energy bills, the thermostat should be set at 88°F (31°C) to help slow down the flow of heat into your home. In this way, energy isn’t wasted while you’re away, and you can use a programmable or smart thermostat so that your home will be cool upon your return.
The Right Temperature for Your Family
Heating and air conditioning units are installed in order to provide comfort for everyone in the household. Everybody has their own preferences, however. To test this, set your thermostat to 81°F for a few hours and take note of how various family members react to the temperature change. Then, drop it by 2°F over the next few days until you reach 71°F.
The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) puts the ideal temperature range for occupants who are dressed for summer between 73° and 79°F. From there, you can adjust your thermostat within the said range, taking into account each family member’s preferred temperature.
